The region was founded in 1937.
Arkhangelskaya region is situated in the north of the East-European plain. The region is washed by the White Sea. It includes islands of the New Land, Frantz Iosif`s Land, Solovetsky and some others. Arkhangelskaya region borders on Nenetsky autonomous okrug in the north-east, on the republic of Komi in the east, on Kirovskaya region in the south-east, on Vologodskaya region in the south, on the republic of Karelia in the west.
Main rivers of the region are the North Dvina, the Onega, the Mezen. In the region there are about 2,500 lakes.
Resources: oil, gas, bauxites, raw materials for building industry.
Area of the region is 587.4 thousand sq. km. Its population is 1491.9 thousand people. Density of population is 2.5 persons per sq. km.
The region is divided into 20 districts, 14 towns, 38 town settlements, 240 villages. Nenetsky autonomous okrug is also a constituent of Arkhangelskaya region.
The centre of the region is the town of Arkhangelsk. It was founded in 1584. Distance to Moscow is 1,133 km.
