 History

Tomskaya region was founded in 1944.

Tomsk, administrative centre of the region, was built as a fortress on the river the Tom in 1604. In 1629 it became the centre of the region and then trade centre of Siberia. In 1804 Tomsk was the centre of Tomskaya province. By the end of the 19th century Tomsk became a big economic and cultural centre of Siberia. Now Tomsk is an educational centre of the Western Siberia.
 

 Geographical location

Tomskaya region is situated in the south-east of the West-Siberian plain. Tomskaya region borders on Kemerovskaya and Novosibirskaya regions in the south, on Omskaya region in the south-west, on Khanty-Mansyisky autonomous region in the west, north-west and the north, on Krasnoyarsky region in the north-east and the east.

Main river is the Ob with its tributaries.

The climate is continental.
 

 Administrative division

The region is divided into 16 districts, 4 towns of the regional submission, 14 town settlements, 199 villages.

Centre of the region is the town of Tomsk. It was founded in 1604. Distance to Moscow is 3,500 km.
