Stavropolsky region is situated in the central part of Perdkavkazja and on the northern range of the Big Caucasus. The region borders on the republic of the Northern Osetia, the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria and Georgia in the south, on Krasnodarsky region in the south-west and the west, on Rostovskaya region in the north, on the republic of Kalmykia in the north-east, on the republic of Dagestan in the east, on Chechnya and Ingushetia in the south-east.
The climate is continental.
The region was founded in 1924.
