Khanty-Mansyisky autonomous okrug is situated on the West-Siberian plain. The okrug borders on Tyumenskaya region in the south, on Sverdlovskaya region in the south-west, on the republic of Komi in the west, on Yamalo-Nenetsky autonomous okrug in the north, on Krasnoyarsky region in the east.

The largest rivers are the Ob, the Irtysh. The largest lakes: the Tormomtor, the Vandmtor, Samotlor.

Agricultural fields occupy 3% of the territory of the okrug, marshes - 44.3%, surface waters - 6.6%, forests - 44%.

The climate is continental with long severe winter.
 

Khanty-Mansyisky okrug was founded in 1930.

The okrug is divided into 8 districts, 10 towns of okrug submission, 28 town settlements, 60 villages.

Centre of the okrug is the town of Khanty-Mansyisk. It was founded in 1950. Distance to Moscow is 2,759 km.

Main towns: Surgut, Nizhnevartovsk, Nefteugansk, Kogalym, Kanty-Mansyisk.

Population - 1371.5 thousand people, among them natives of the okrug: Khanty and Mansi make up about 20 thousand. Density of population is 2.6 persons per sq. km.
 

Base of the okrug`s economics makes up oil-mining. More than half of the Russian oil is mined in the okrug. The okrug is the fourth in gas-mining. In production of power the okrug occupies the second place in Russia.
