Chelyabinskaya region is situated in the boundary between Europe and Asia. It occupies 87,900 sq. km, that is compared with the territory of Hungary.
In the region there are 27 towns and about 300 settlements. Population is 3,678 thousand people: citizens - 81.3%.
The regional centre is Chelyabinsk, located in 1,600 km from Moscow. Population of the city is 1.1 million people. By its population the region is the 8th in Russia. Other big towns are Magnitogorsk, Zlatoust, Miass.
Nature of Chelyabinskaya region is unique. In the east of the mountains the Urals there is Ilmensky sanctuary, where more than 260 minerals have been found.
Coniferous forests cover 28% of the region`s territory. There are 3,170 lakes, which are rich in cure mud.
In the region there are iron, magnet and copper ore, nickel, gold. More than 300 industrial fields have been explored.
Among chemical raw materials there are phosphates, salts. The region is rich in marble, limestone, fire-clay, sands, building stones, coal. Reserves of coal make up more than 700 million tons.
